OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- An apartment fire near 108th and Fort St. forced people to evacuate their homes Wednesday night. Hours later the fire department said the fire caused more than $1 million in damages.
The blaze broke out around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night on the third floor of one of the buildings. In a news release, the fire department said the cause was not known.
Flames burst through the roof shortly after crews arrived. At one point the floors collapsed causing firefighters to change to defensive mode.
Fire officials say 12 to 24 units were affected by the fire and one person was taken to a hospital due to a pre-existing condition.
Crews battled the blaze for more than two hours and did not have it fully under control at last check around 9 p.m. They remained throughout the night taking care of hot spots.
Investigators will not be able to go in for some time as the weight of the water makes the structure unsafe and vulnerable to collapse.
