OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- More than a year after paying half down for a new driveway, a Bellevue homeowner has nothing to show for it. The senior citizen might be out thousands dollars.
Her driveway has cracks and so does the trust Sheryl Shottenkirk placed in a contractor.
“I had so many people tell me he had plenty of time to get it done and he just didn’t,” Sheryl said. “He never came back once I signed the thing and gave him the check.”
Sheryl wrote a check for $5,250 to Robert Long of Long Concrete.
The homeowner’s daughter and a neighbor did some of the work for the contractor, tearing out the rock from an area to make way for a patio. That was early last May and more than a year later they’re still waiting for the project to get started.
The contract doesn’t have a completion date but Sheryl’s daughter, Deb Hudson, said that omission shouldn’t matter. “Very ridiculous,” she said. “When you sign a contract you expect to have it done within a certain time frame and a year is not that time frame.”
Robert Long hasn’t returned Six on Your Side messages but he did call the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB’s Jim Hegarty said, “Clearly, our goal for this complainant is to get a full refund for them. So we’re going to work closely with both the business.”
Hoping for a refund Sheryl says she’s learned an expensive lesson on paying in thirds when hiring work to be done.
She told Mike McKnight, “I gave half of it down. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to do that until I saw you last year on TV.”
The company agreement with customers states that Long’s reputation is solid as concrete but Deb Hudson said, “I don’t know how you explain a year’s worth of excuses.”
Deb and Sheryl say that only a full refund will prove how much truth is poured into that motto.
Robert Long promised the Better Business Bureau that he will refund the down payment on Monday. The customer has also filed a report with Bellevue Police.
