Nebraska Deputy Shoots, Kills Man

Rushville, NE The Nebraska State Patrol has taken over the investigation of a deputy-involved shooting that left a man dead in northwest Nebraska.

NSP reports the incident began about 10:20 a.m. Sunday. Sheridan County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an assault at a home in Rushville. They found the victim with a broken arm.

Soon after, the suspect was found at Immaculate Conception Church in Rushville. NSP says about 11:07 a.m., something happened where a deputy shot the suspect, Clarence Leading Fighter, 32. The suspect later died.

The sheriff's office requested NSP investigate the shooting. The initial investigation indicates the deputy used deadly force to "protect himself and parishoners from potential serious harm." A news release did not elaborate on what happened. A grand jury will be convened to look into the incident, which is required by state law.
