Rex Smith

Rex is an award-winning sports reporter who joined WOWT in December of 2019.

He previously worked at WPTA in Fort Wayne, Ind., for more than three years. There, he held the title of Weekend Morning Anchor and Fill-in Sports Anchor.

In addition to his work at WPTA, Rex was a play-by-play broadcaster for a media company called SummitCitySports, which broadcasts high school sports live on Facebook and YouTube.

At the 2017 Associated Press Indiana Broadcasters Association Awards, Rex earned first place in the “Best Sports Report or Program” category with a special report he put together called “The Longest Yard.”

Rex was also part of a group that took third place at the 2017 Society of Professional Journalists “Best in Indiana” Awards for breaking news reporting.

Originally from northeast Ohio, Rex graduated from Kent State University in 2016. While in school, he completed internships at WJW Fox 8 Cleveland and News Talk 1480 WHBC in Canton, Ohio. He was also the sports director of KSU’s award-winning college TV station TV2.

When he isn’t covering or watching sports, you’ll find Rex either spending time with his wife and his dog, eating pizza, watching Marvel movies, or any combination of the three.
