DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. (KTIV) - An investigation is underway in southeast South Dakota after someone was found dead in an apartment.

According to the South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation, a deceased woman was found in Dakota Dunes Wednesday morning. The body was found at the Wellington apartment complex and authorities are calling it a “suspicious death.”

Authorities say no arrests have been made at this time, but there is no threat to the public.

“A young child was found safe by law enforcement,” said South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley in a press release. Authorities did not elaborate on where the child was found or how they are connected to the incident.

South Dakota DCI and local authorities are gathering more information on the woman’s death. Authorities say more details will be released when they become available.

Family & friends speak out

KTIV has talked to the family and friends of the woman, and they have identified her as 23-year-old Jordan “Jordy” Beardshear. Perhaps what makes her death the most difficult, they say, is no one person has enough clues to suspect potential domestic violence.

The family is now left to remember her as she lived. Jordy’s father, Shane Christiansen, says she was a bright light to the world.

“And that was her demeanor, she was all about having fun when it was time to have fun,” said Christiansen. “But when it was time to work, it was she just buckled down. It was the best of both worlds.”

To Christiansen and her friends, Jordy’s death could not be more unexpected. They believe that her death may have been caused by domestic violence. But nobody had all the signs, until now, when they met after her death.

“So my message is, if you see something, say something, preventive, you know, being preventative about this is about the only way you can stop it,” said Christiansen.

Friends and family say Jordy had just moved to the Dunes a few months before her death. It is a safe community they said. A place where she could thrive.

“I just you know, I just want people to know that, you know, she was a great person and she always looked out for anybody that she was close to. Matteo was played on her life,” said Claudia Orozco, one of Jordy’s friends.

“Matteo” is Jordy’s one-year-old son. Her pride and joy who she protected fiercely. Christiansen confirmed Matteo is safe following Jordy’s death.

“She put herself first for the longest time. So when he came to the world, it was just like a bundle of joy to her to like a whole it was just a whole shift change,” said Shaylee Wanderscheid, another one of Jordy’s friends.
