OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - As part of the Keep Omaha Beautiful Program, a group of veterans in the Omaha metro clocked quite a few community hours each month, beautifying parks and honoring the fallen.

It may be early in the morning but that’s not stopping these Marines.

“We pick up trash, we pick up trees, mattresses, tires, whatever else,” said Jerry Boganowski.

The Miguel Keith Detachment 609 has been coming to the park for the last 12 years on the last Saturday of each month.

Miguel Keith is a former Marine who was from Omaha and died in action in May of 1970. These Marines come here to beautify the park in honor of Miguel.

“The man was 18 years old, gave his life for the country. Never got to go to college, never got to pay for a car or mortgage. He gave his life and his entire future for his Marines and for the country”, said Boganowski.

After the clean-up at the park, they move on to St. Mary’s Cemetery to take care of graves and render salutes to former Marines like James Merideth and Edward Gomez.

“They’re Marines, we respect them, we didn’t know them but they’re part of the brotherhood and we wouldn’t want them to be forgotten”, said Boganowski.

Jerry says they plan on doing this for years to come.
