Alleged drunk driver leaves trail of fire in northwest Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - In the movie “Back to the Future,” a DeLorean becomes a time machine leaving behind a trail of fire. An alleged drunk driver unknowingly reenacted that scene.
That’s what it looked like on a northwest Omaha street late Saturday night. It’s not a DeLorean but a small compact vehicle leaving behind a fiery trail.
The driver ran over a fire hydrant and dragged it underneath his car for several blocks. Deputies believe the sparks ignited gas leaking from the vehicle.
A flare up can be seen where the punctured tank left a pool of fuel. A video caught on a doorbell cam has been taken into evidence by Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies.
“The ring cam and the different cameras out there are really helping us now. This is a prime example where we can show video evidence of how dangerous someone who is drinking and driving can be, how dangerous they can be,” said Chief Deputy Sheriff Way Hudson.
Hudson says the car dragging the hydrant and another vehicle belonging to a relative of the driver both burned in a nearby driveway. A neighbor has been left with a scorched yard and a damaged sprinkler system.
M.U.D. replaced the hydrant Monday.
According to police, the driver is identified as Shane Parsons who tested close to twice the legal limit for alcohol in his system and faces charges of a second offense of DUI, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a property damage crash.
