Douglas County confirms delta variant case
The Douglas County Health Department on Monday said it had confirmed the first local case of the COVID-19 delta variant, first reported in India, and is in the early stages of investigating the contact history.
A woman in her 40s has been confirmed to have the delta variant, the DCHD release states. It’s the 32nd case of delta variant reported in Nebraska, to date.
“The only surprise is that it took this long for the state’s largest county to have a first case of this variant,” Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said in the release. “Please make sure to get the vaccine.”
According to the release, those who have already had COVID-19 should still get vaccinated as research hasn’t yet confirmed how long the virus antibodies remain in the system.
“It has been found that people can get the disease a second time, so to avoid that and build your immunity, you are advised to get the free, safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine,” the release states.
Douglas County cases update
The health department said Monday it had confirmed 36 new positive cases since Friday, bringing the total number of local COVID-19 cases to 72,106. The rolling seven-day average is 13.
The local death toll remains at 730.
The DCHD COVID-19 dashboard no longer reports COVID-19 recoveries.
DCHD also reported Monday that local hospitals are 75% full, with 364 beds available; ICU beds are 63% full with 127 beds available. Of those patients, 20 are hospitalized with COVID-19, three of them receiving ICU care, and four on ventilators. Additionally, DCHD is monitoring four more potential COVID-19 patients.
