College World Series: Exclusive merchandise available only inside the stadium
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - We all know the competition on the field is pretty intense during the College World Series. One local vendor says the competition is just as fierce outside of the stadium or those selling CWS merchandise.
For 20 years Pat Lawlor was in the crowd of vendors selling t-shirts around the stadium at the College World Series. This year, Lawlor says he won’t be in the game.
He believes the most desirable shirts will be sold inside the stadium and he says it’s not really a surprise.
“If you go to a U2 concert there aren’t stores outside selling a U2 shirt. When you go to the Super Bowl, you gotta go inside to get the shirt. If you go to a Garth Brooks concert, you gotta go inside to buy the shirt, so I get it. They’re trying to get as much money from their licensing structure as possible,” said Lawlor, Lawlor’s Custom Sportswear.
“They can only buy from certain individuals but anybody can sell cotton t-shirts just as long as it’s from an NCAA licensee vendor,” said Jason Hunt, Event One Sports Gear.
Jason Hunt is the event manager for Event One Sports Gear. He says the fans who go to the games will have a selection of special t-shirts to choose from.
“We will have different colored garments. We will have unique graphics you’re not going to find anywhere else on the property of the stadium, whether it’s fan fest or it’s inside the stadium. We do keep a lot of our designs unique to them so the fans that have the ability to come in and go to the game can only get those designs,” said Hunt.
Lawlor says that puts everybody on the outside in the same CWS merchandise boat.
“You’re in a place where 80 businesses are selling the exact same stuff from three vendors. It’s all price competitive and by the time you’re done, yeah, you make a little money. But I put an emphasis on you make a little money,” said Lawlor.
So now, he is busy printing up shirts for another event instead of the CWS. Lawlor plans to sell other merchandise.
In July, he’s going south for the summer to sell shirts at the USA Volleyball Beach Tournaments in Flordia.
“When we go to those events we’re the only vendor selling tee shirts. I like that relationship a lot better,” said Lawlor.
Pat Lawlor says he plans to spend some time out at the ballpark this year, but this time as a fan.
