Taste of North Omaha backs entrepreneurship, vaccinations
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Talented entrepreneurs in north Omaha will get a chance to show off their products in the Fourth Annual Taste of North Omaha.
Organizers hope the event will help grow small businesses. They also hope it will help in the fight against COVID-19 in the minority community. Recent events have not helped north Omaha’s Imagine It All. When people who live outside the community think about the northern part of the city, their thoughts are usually negative. But there are people who are working to shine a light on the many positive things in the community.
Malcolm Tiller is the organizer of Taste of North Omaha, which is designed to bring people who are trying to start a business together to show off their talents and products.
“Food vendors of any type of different food,” Tiller said.” Any kind of different types of food, from barbecue to Southern to just comfort food, we’ll have T-shirts designers out here, we’ll have jewelry sales, shoes. ...”
Tiller says there will be more than food and merchandise at the event. There will be COVID-19 vaccinations available for a community that is lagging on vaccinations against the deadly virus.
“I’ve been vaccinated. ... I know what COVID can do, and the vaccination is stopping that from happening,” he said. “I’ve lost people from DOVID, real dear friends of mine. I don’t want to see that continue.”
TIller hopes the event will help the area economy by bringing in new business.
Derrick Caldwell and his family moved to Omaha from Kansas City six months ago with a plan to open a barbecue restaurant. “We started just with the trailer, doing pop-ups on 30th and Ames, and 90th and Fort,” he said. It was extremely hard. It wasn’t an easy process.”
Caldwell now has a brick-and-mortar business on 40th and Ames. He said he believes the Taste of North Omaha can help the path for other startups a little easier.
“I definitely think it can help other people,” he said, “and bringing north Omaha to Omaha will motivate a lot of people in the community and to get things going.”
