VALLEY, Neb. (WOWT) - A canine is an important partner for law enforcement especially in uncovering illegal drugs.

But the dogs and their training don’t come cheap after extensive training to detect drugs.

“Simulate a potential hidden compartment,” said Ed Van Buren, Code 2 K-9.

The dogs from Code 2 K-9 come with a bumper-to-bumper warranty. Sixteen-month-old Sonic is ready to run with the big dogs in canine training.

“Yeah he’s a real rookie but he’s got a lot of drive and he’s a very social dog which is something else we look for,” said Buren.

In about six weeks, Sonic could become the only K-9 in the small Valley Police Force.

“We’ll continue to use him for vehicle searches and tracking for individuals that may be lost like the elderly who leave a nursing home or something like that,” said Valley Police Officer James Deemer.

But the Belgian Malinois from the Netherlands and his training cost more than $12,000. Valley’s mayor says tax money isn’t available so the city is asking for donations.

“Well, I think it’s good because our businesses and residents who are going to benefit from having this addition to our police department will be able to put a little bit into it as well,” said Valley Mayor Cindy Grove.

The Valley Police Department has five full-time sworn-in officers and four cruisers. The fundraising isn’t just about buying and trying Sonic but also he and his handler are going to need a way to get around.

So the city needs money to buy another cruiser, the total amount of money needed to fund the K-9 unit is $42,000. But Officer Deemer says that’s an investment in more than crimefighting.

“Good to be out in the schools and around kids, it’s just a good interaction with the community,” said Deemer.

Before Sonic goes on duty the mayor and Valley Police are requesting backup. They’re asking for donations from those he and his handler will serve and protect.

A GoFundMe has been set up by Valley Police, donations can be also be mailed or dropped off at Valley City Hall.
