Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that some women need but hesitate to talk about. The number of women opting to undergo this procedure is growing and our August Health Check looks at how this has changed one woman's life.
Cinda Taege put off sitting in front of a doctor for 19 years but she kept experiencing pain in her shoulder and neck.
She says, "Ever since I had my daughter about 19 years ago, I just felt like my body wasn't my body anymore and I needed a lift and wanted to bring it back to where it was before pregnancy."
Dr. Nagi Ayoub says if you are a candidate for breast reduction surgery the symptoms will be clear.
The plastic surgeon says you'll notice, "upper back, shoulder or neck pain, breakdown of skin underneath the breasts, shoulder grooving, rounding of the shoulders. Most women present with those symptoms whether young or old."
Breast reduction surgery removes fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts. It's about a three hour procedure. It usually takes a week to return to work and about six weeks of healing but it's well worth it for patients putting up with the pain.
Most insurance companies cover it if the patient has the signs and symptoms that alter their quality of life.
Cinda's insurance covered her procedure but she says it's costing her elsewhere.
She says, "It's a little more expensive now but I am having a good time shopping."
Like many other patients Cinda says clothes fit her better after the surgery. Now the only decision is which to buy.
Breast reduction surgery is not advised for women who plan to breast feed.
