Listen to your Heart

Many of us have enough New Year's resolutions to last all of 2007 but there is a way to change our lives in just six months. It's a program helping battle the number-one killer of women. In January's Health Check we have a look at what can happen if you "listen to your heart."

Darlene Bullock knows her workout by heart. She hits the treadmill to honor her mother's memory

She says, "My mom always had heart problems and she died three years ago of congestive heart failure. And I always said to myself I was going to commit myself to taking better care of myself than my mom could."

Bullock chose Alegent Health and the YMCA's Listen to Your Heart program. It teamed her with a personal trainer and a nurse practitioner to help educate Bullock and evaluate her progress.

The change is impressive. Darlene has seen an 86 point drop in total cholesterol, with the largest drop in LDL, the kind that's bad for you. She has lost 10 pounds and she has lowered her blood pressure. All are steps to fight heart disease, the number-one killer of women.

Nurse Practitioner Sheri Rowland says, "They're not as good at identifying their own personal risk factors like what is their blood pressure, what is their cholesterol and so we help them identify their own personal values and coach them on making behavior and lifestyle changes."

Darlene's changes extend beyond the gym. Trading candy for fruits and vegetables has been an adjustment

"I didn't like any green salad," she says. "Now, basically, I have a salad every day."

The difference is that she has more energy during the day and sleeps better at night.

She says, "I had my doubts but after this program I decided I can control my health and my future. And so far, I am doing it."

The six-month program is $75 for "Y" members. Those who are not members also pay a monthly fee.

Learn more at a free introductory session. There's one on January 25 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the "Y" at 76th and Maple and another one on February 1, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Papillion Y.
