Five children ranging in age from 27 to 5 -- It's enough to make your head spin, but it's not all Louise Wilcox balances. She also cares for her 88-year-old mother-in-law Marice, who lives with them in Omaha. Louise is part of the "Sandwich Generation", and we'll feature her story in September's Health Check report.
Alegent Health Geriatric Medicine Specialist Doctor Heather Titman says being a caregiver times two can really take a toll on women, leaving many exhausted, irritable, anxious, and even depressed. To combat that, Dr. Titman recommends sharing the work load, taking time for ourselves, and knowing our limits. There is no shame in saying we can't do everything, in fact Dr. Titman says it's sometimes better for us to be a daughter, rather than a caregiver.
Through trial and error, Louise Wilcox has found what works. For her, the most important thing is to start each morning with a run. Louise has lost weight and improved her own health, making it easier to care for others.
