Christy Estlund of Papillion is a poster child for staying active. Estlund transitioned from playing on the U.S. National Soccer team while in college to a triathlete and mom. Here's the catch -- injuries followed her. Estlund knows women are up to eight times more likely to have an ACL injury than men. She tore her ACL in college, again several years later, and just a month ago playing with her children.
Doctor Sean Mullendore, a primary care doctor with Alegent Health who specializes in sports medicine, says no one is sure why women are more at risk. It could be our flexibility or strength. Doctors do know there are some things we can do to reduce our risk. Doctor Mullendore offers his suggestions in July's Health Check report.
Christy is planning on having her third operation. From there it takes up to a year to rehabilitate the knee. The third time around is a little overwhelming, but Christy will do whatever it takes to be able to play with her kids.
