Ross Jernstrom is a very familiar face to Heartland viewers. He has been a sports anchor and reporter in Omaha since 1979.
Ross is currently the sports director and main anchor for WOWT. For 15 years he produced and anchored the award-winning "Sunday Sports Extra" - a 30-minute show that was the highest rated sports show in Omaha. The Associated Press recognized "Sunday Sports Extra"with the First Place award for "Best Sportscast" in Nebraska nine times between 1994-2009,
He also produces Channel 6 Sports specials, such as "the Road to Omaha," a preview of the College World Series, and "Big Red Preview," a preseason show on the Nebraska football team. Ross has won numerous awards, including the Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters Award for "Best Sports Story", "Best Sports Special", and is also a ten-time winner for "Best Sportscast".
Ross received the "2003 Outstanding Service Award" by the Nebraska High School Athletic Directors Association for his contribution to high school sports. Ross also received the Nebraska School Activities Association "Distinguished Service Award" in 2006 at the Boys State Basketball Tournament.
Ross is a native Omahan. He is a graduate of Westside High School and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in broadcast journalism. He has been a sports anchor at KHAS-TV (Hastings) and KETV (Omaha).
Ross's wife, Julie, is a teacher in the Millard Public Schools. They have a son Jay, and a daughter Holly.
