Ross Jernstrom is a very familiar face to Heartland viewers. He has been a sports anchor and reporter in Omaha since 1979. Ross is currently the sports producer and anchor for "Sunday Sports Extra." The 30-minute highlight show airs on WOWT, Sunday nights at 10:35 PM. The only show of its kind in the Heartland, it features the top stories of the week in local college and high school sports. "Sunday Sports Extra" has had a successful run since the show started in 1994. It consistently wins its time period. He also produces Channel 6 Sports specials, such as "the Road to Omaha," a preview of the College World Series, and "Big Red Preview," a preseason show on the Nebraska football team. Ross has won numerous awards, including the Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters Award for "Best Sports Story", "Best Sports Special", and is also a five-time winner for "Best Sportscast". Ross recently received the "2003 Outstanding Service Award" by the Nebraska High School Athletic Directors Association for his contribution to high school sports. Ross is a native Omahan. He is a graduate of Westside High School and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in broadcast journalism. He has been a sports anchor at KHAS-TV (Hastings) and KETV (Omaha). Ross's wife, Julie, is a teacher in the Millard Public Schools. They have a son Jay, and a daughter Holly.
