At the level of swim competition going on currently at the Century Link Center, swimming safety isn't exactly top of mind among among fans. But anything can happen.
That's why local lifeguards aren't taking any chances, guarding the Swim Trials pools.
Fifty Red Cross-trained lifeguards are working over the course of the trials, each of them having undergone extensive in-service trainings to prepare for the event.
Alyson Roach, spokeswoman for the Heartland Chapter, said it's important to build a culture of water safety well beyond lifeguards and athletes. She reminds the public the Red Cross provides aquatic training for all age levels, as well as emergency response.
