UNO stretched its winning streak to seven by sweeping a doubleheader at Western Illinois 5-3 and 9-2 Saturday afternoon.
Omaha put up two runs in the second inning of game one. Connor Messinger, Cole Gruber and Cory Buckley singled to load the bases for Marcus Ethen, who delivered a single up the middle.
The Mavericks extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Caleb Palensky was hit by a pitch and advanced to second and third on wild pitches before coming home on Alex Mortensen's single. Ryan Keele was hit by a pitch and Tyler Splichal walked, loading the bases for Messinger, who hit a two-run single.
Western got on the board with two runs in the sixth and tacked on another in the seventh. Zach Williamsen (2-1) gave up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Tom Constand (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Mortensen led the way in the second game, going 4-for-4 with a four RBIs and a run scored. UNO again jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Alex Schultz and Collin Leif singled and a sacrifice bunt by Palensky put them in scoring position. Schultz then scored on a wild pitch and Leif came in on Mortensen's double to center.
The Mavericks again put up a three-spot in the fifth. Palensky walked and Brett Bass singled, both scoring on a Mortensen double. Splichal's single plated Mortensen.
Buckley led off the sixth with a single and later scored on Schultz's single to make it 6-0. Western Illinois responded with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, cutting it to 6-2. Omaha pushed across three more runs in the eighth, using three hits and a Leatherneck error.
Matt Tew (2-4) recorded his second straight win, allowing one run on seven hits over six innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Tyler Willman (0-4) took the loss, surrendering six runs (four earned) and 11 hits with five strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
