The Mavericks swept into the Summit League era by taking both games of a doubleheader from Fort Wayne, 6-3 and 2-0, at the Ballpark at Boys Town Friday afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Connor Messinger went 3-for-3 in the opener, homering twice. Messinger had a three-run shot in the first inning and a two-run blast in the sixth.
That was enough support for starter Tyler Fox (3-1), who allowed one run on five hits in five innings while striking out a career-high six batters and walking one. Jason Kalber (0-4) threw a complete game in the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Zach Williamsen (1-1) shut out the Mastodons in game two, limiting them to three hits with a career-best six strikeouts and one walk. Losing pitcher Chuck Weaver (2-2) surrendered two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and seven walks over 4.1 innings.
Omaha took the lead in the fourth starting with a Tyler Splichal single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Messinger, moved to third on a ground out by Caleb Palensky and scored on Cory Buckley's single to center. Buckley stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Brett Bass single.
With the wins, the Mavericks are now 8-15 (2-0 Summit League) while the Mastodons are 11-13 (0-2 Summit League).
