The UNO hockey team will open its 2013-14 season on Monday, Oct. 7 when it hosts the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in an exhibition game at the CenturyLink Center. Game time is 7:07 p.m.
The Mavericks, like most college teams, have traditionally played a Canadian university prior to the start of NCAA play. The University of Manitoba was a regular on the Mavs' schedule for the first 12 years of the program. UNO also has played the University of British Columbia and the University of Lethbridge, most recently beating Lethbridge, 4-1, to open the 2012-13 season. All-time, UNO is 15-2-0 against Canadian universities.
There is a connection between UNO and NAIT beyond this year's game. Former Maverick Mike Gabinet serves as an assistant coach for the Ooks. Gabinet, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, played defense for the Mavericks from 2000-04. In 130 games, he scored six goals and 41 assists for 47 points to go along with 138 penalty minutes. He still ranks seventh all-time in points by a defenseman at UNO.
The Mavericks will open the regular season on Oct. 11 and 12 when they host a two-game series at home against Bentley of Atlantic Hockey.
