UNO picked up its second straight win over a Big Ten opponent, defeating Iowa 9-6 Saturday afternoon in Wichita.
Brett Bass reached on a fielding error to open the game, moved to second on Tyler Splichal's single and advanced to third on Clayton Taylor's sacrifice bunt. Ryan Keele's sacrifice fly plated Bass and the Mavs took a 1-0 lead.
Iowa (7-7) tied it in the bottom of the inning, but the Mavericks (3-7) put up three runs on two hits in the third. Brett Miller reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a wild pitch and Collin Leif sent a two-run single down the right field line to plate Keele and Caleb Palensky for a 4-1 lead.
After the Hawkeyes added a run in the bottom of the frame, Omaha delivered another big inning with five runs on three hits and an error in the fourth.
Splichal drew a walk and Taylor reached on a catcher's interference call and stolen bases put both runners in scoring position. Miller was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Keele singled to score Splichal. Connor Messinger came through with a two-run single that plated Miller and Taylor and a Palensky singled to center brought Keele across. Messinger notched the Mavs' final when Bass snagged a bases-loaded walk and it was a 9-2 game.
Iowa scored two runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth.
The win went to reliever Kyler Brady (1-0), who allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in two innings. Iowa starter Sasha Kuebel (1-4) surrendered eight runs (six earned) off six hits with three walks and a strikeout over 3.1 innings.
