The Mavericks won their fifth straight, topping host Western Illinois 11-6 in 10 innings Friday afternoon.
With the win, the league-leading Mavericks improved to 11-15 (5-0 Summit League) while the Leathernecks dropped to 7-22 (1-4 Summit League).
With WIU leading 4-3 with one out in the top of the ninth, Ryan Keele reached on an error and advanced on a Tyler Splichal ground out. Cory Buckley delivered a single, his third hit of the day, to score Keele and tie the game.
In the top of the 10th, UNO capitalized on four Leatherneck errors by scoring seven runs. Connor Messinger was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Cole Gruber's sacrifice bunt and went to third on a Caleb Palensky single. Clayton Taylor walked to load the bases and Brett Bass reached on a fielder's choice to score Messinger. Alex Mortensen then singled down the left field line and Keele singled up the middle, plating Taylor to make it 6-4. Splichal reached on a fielding error and Mortensen and Bass scored on a throwing error on the play to give the Mavs an 8-4 lead.
Buckley reached on another fielding error, which allowed Keele to cross the plate. Messinger reached on another error, which scored Splichal, and following a pitching change, Gruber added an RBI double down the left field line that plated Buckley to make it 11-4.
Western come back with two runs in the bottom of the 10th.
The win went to reliever Anthony Falcone (2-0), who threw four scoreless innings while giving up three hits and one walk and striking out two. The loss went to Mason Pingel (1-3), who surrendered seven runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk in the 10th.
