UNO finished its season-opening weekend at the UTSA Classic on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Penn State in San Antonio. The Mavericks are now 0-3.
Ryan Harper (1-0) scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings with two strikeouts and three walks. PSU's Jack Anderson earned his second save of the year.
The loss went to freshman Marcus Ethen (0-1), who allowed three runs on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief. Ethen struck out one and walked three. Freshman starter Tyler Fox threw the first five innings, keeping PSU scoreless with just two hits, four strikeouts and a walk.
Penn State (3-6) scored all its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Aaron Novak drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Montesinos, then moved to third on a wild pitch. James Coates drew another walk and Novak scored on a wild pitch. Elliot Searer then doubled down the left field line to bring in Coates and Searer later scored on Taylor Skerpon's single to right, giving the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.
