The Omaha Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that Creighton senior forward Doug McDermott and University of Nebraska at Omaha senior track athlete Sami Spenner have been named the Omaha Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
McDermott is leading the nation in scoring with 26.5 ppg and currently ranks fifth on the career scoring list in Division I men’s basketball. He is a two-time, first team All-American and also earned Big East Player of the Year honors this past season. McDermott was also recognized last year as the Sportsman of the Year by the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame.
Sami Spenner had a remarkable indoor season for the University of Nebraska at Omaha track team. She has set three school records in the 60 meter hurdles, long jump and Pentathlon. She finished second in the Pentathlon at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships with 4,498 points breaking the American Collegiate record. The following week, Spenner won the Summit League Championship setting a new conference record in the Pentathlon.
The 2014 Omaha Sportsman and Sportswoman will be recognized at the annual Omaha Sports Hall of Fame induction that will be held on Thursday, April 24 at the Scott Conference Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
