The Mavericks picked up their second win of the season, defeating Minnesota 10-9 in 11 innings at the Metrodome Wednesday afternoon.
UNO (2-7) took a 3-0 lead in the second. Clayton Taylor, Ryan Keele and Brett Miller were hit by pitches and Taylor scored on Caleb Palensky's sacrifice fly to center. One batter later, Cole Gruber delivered a two-run single to drive in Keele and Miller.
The Gophers (11-6) answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. Michael Handel led off with a double and later scored on Ryan Abrahamson's single. Bobby Juan singled and Dan Motl singled to bring in Abrahamson. Andy Henkemeyer then knocked a two-run homer to right.
UM upped its advantage with three more runs in the third when Dan Olinger hit a lead-off single and later came in on Handel's single to left. Matt Halloran then hit a two-run homer to right to put the Gophers ahead 8-3.
The Mavericks exploded for five runs on five hits in the fourth inning to tie the game at 8-8. Omaha loaded the bases with no outs as Gruber and Brett Bass singled and Tyler Splichal was hit by a pitch. Alex Mortensen then singled through the left side to plate Gruber and Taylor dropped a single into center to score Bass. Following a Minnesota pitching change, Keele drove in both Mortensen and Splichal with a two-run single and Taylor stole home.
UNO regained the lead in the sixth as Mortensen crossed the plate on Keele's bases-loaded ground out into a double play, but UM tied the game again the bottom of the eighth. Handel led off with a solo homer to left to make it 9-9.
Omaha finally broke through in the top of the 11th when Keele doubled to right center and Palensky drove him in with a double to the same spot.
