The hot Mavericks completed a weekend sweep at Western Illinois with a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon for their eighth straight victory.
As was the case all weekend, Omaha jumped out to an early lead, 3-0, with four hits in the second inning. A two-out single by Alex Schultz scored Tyler Splichal from second, followed by Caleb Palensky's two-run double.
The Leathernecks chipped away with a run in the third and another in the fifth, but the Mavericks came back with a run in the sixth as Schultz reached on a fielder's choice allowing Connor Messinger to score for a 4-2 lead.
In the seventh, WIU's Zack Burling, Jameson Henning and Steve Kedroski singled to make it a 4-3 game.
UNO added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Schultz led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Palensky and moved to third on a ground out. Alex Mortensen then reached on a fielding error that allowed Schultz to score.
Steven Schoonover (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings with three strikeouts and a walk. WIU starter Mason Pingel (1-4) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits with one strikeout over two innings.
The Mavericks improved to 14-15 (8-0 Summit League), maintaining their place at the top of the conference standings.
