The Mavericks finished the 2013 season with an 8-2 win over South Dakota State Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Senior Cory Buckley went 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season, three RBIs and two runs scored in his final game. He capped the season with a team-leading .391 average. Fellow senior Ryan Keele went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two walks. His .385 average was second on the team.
Zach Williamsen (4-1) scattered five hits and allowed two runs over 5.2 innings, striking out five. SDSU starter Kolton Emery (3-4) took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Emery struck out two and walked one over 4.1 innings.
The Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a Jordan Varga RBI single. Omaha tied the game 1-1 in the fifth on a squeeze bunt by Cole Gruber, then went ahead 2-1 on a single from Buckley. Two-run singles from Alex Mortensen and Alex Schultz pushed the lead to 6-1.
SDSU came back with a run in the sixth as Daniel Telford scored on Reid Clary's bases-loaded walk to cut it to 6-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Buckley knocked a two-run shot over the left field fence.
South Dakota State, which heads to the Summit League Tournament as the top seed, ends the regular season 31-21 (16-10 Summit League).
With the win, UNO closed the year with the conference's regular-season title, an overall record of 27-22 and a Summit League mark of 20-6. The Mavericks aren't eligible for post-season play being a new league member.
