OMAHA, Neb. – Wisconsin scored four goals in the second period and pulled away for a 6-2 win over the Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 18-14-2 overall and 14-10-2 in the WCHA. The Mavs have lost five straight games, and the series marked just the second time this year that UNO had been swept at home.
For the second night in a row, Wisconsin scored just after the three minute mark of the first period. Tyler Barnes shot trickled just past UNO goaltender John Faulkner for a powerplay goal at 3:03.
UNO tied the game on a sharp passing play. Dominic Zombo sent a rink-wide pass to Ryan Walters who one-timed a pass to a streaking Josh Archibald. He steered the puck in just past the outstretched leg of UW goalie Joel Rumpel to make it 1-1 at intermission.
The Mavericks have a five-minute power play when UW's Brendan Woods was given a checking from behind penalty and a game misconduct. But Wisconsin was able to kill off the penalty and just 13 seconds later, Ryan Little scored to give the Badgers a 2-1 advantage at 2:56 of the second.
Michael Mersch, Jack McCabe and Mark Zengerle (powerplay) followed with goals, the last with only five seconds remaining in the second period to give the Badgers a 5-1 lead.
Mersch talled again early in the third period before Nick Seeler scored his third goal of the year off a wrist shot from the point at 9:26.
Wisconsin outshot UNO 34-29. Faulkner made 28 saves while Rumpel stopped 27.
The Mavericks finish the regular season at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
