McDermott Ties MVC Record With Sixth Player of Week Award of Season

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton forward Doug McDermott has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after averaging 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a pair of double-digit victories last week.

McDermott has now earned the league's top weekly award six times this season, tying The Valley's all-time single-season mark first set by
Bradley's Hersey Hawkins in 1987-88. Hawkins (14) is the only player with more career Player of the Week recognitions than McDermott (11).

McDermott shot 58.1 percent from the floor (18-31), including 57.1 percent from 3-point range (8-14) and also made 90.9 percent of his free throws (10-11).

His week began with 29 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a 91-77 win vs. Missouri State. He sank 5-of-7 three-pointers in the victory. McDermott scored 18 of his points in the second half, and he¹s now scored 68 points in two meetings with MSU this season.

On Sunday, McDermott scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half of a 75-58 win vs. Bradley. He made 9-of-15 shots and had the final nine points in Creighton¹s 12-0 second half run that gave the hosts a 17-point lead with less than five minutes left. The victory ensured Creighton¹s 14th 20-win season in the past 15 years.

McDermott¹s big week give him a nation-best totals of 551 points and 191 field goals this season, and he¹s just the fourth player in Creighton history with three straight seasons of 500 or more points.

Creighton (20-3, 9-2 MVC) returns to the court on Wednesday with a 6:05 pm CST game at Indiana State (14-8, 7-4 MVC).
