McDermott Scores 39 As Creighton Cruises 74-52

Doug McDermott scored a JQH Arena record 39 points in Creighton's 74-52 win over Missouri State Friday night in Springfield.

McDermott had 11 points at the half, then scored all the points in Creighton's 18-5 run to start the second half as the Jays ran away from MSU. He made 14 straight shots from the field at one point and the crowd gave a sarcastic cheer when his shot from the right wing was short with 4:17 to play.

Creighton (15-1, 5-0 MVC) has now won 10 straight games and won its first six games away from home for the first time since 1942-43. Missouri State dropped to 5-12 (3-2 MVC).

Neither team was able to break away in a tight first half that featured 10 lead changes and four ties. The Jays closed on a 4-0 run to take a 32-27 lead into intermission as McDermott led all players with 11 points.

Missouri State missed its first three shots after intermission and Creighton took advantage as McDermott scored on a pair of inside post moves to make it 36-27 and prompt a Bears' timeout with 17:54 left.

The Bluejays then forced another miss from long-range and McDermott's traditional three-point play made it a double-figure advantage for the first time. After a Gavin Thurman three-pointer halted CU's 11-0 run spanning the half, McDermott answered with a three.

Jahenns Manigat added 11 points for Creighton, which shot 57.4 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from downtown.

MSU had three men in double-figures, led by 11 points from Keith Pickens and 10 each by Anthony Downing and Gavin Thurman. The Bears shot 37.9 percent from the field and were 5-of-23 behind the arc.
