Sunday night prime time it’s Creighton versus Duke in the NCAA Tournament, but at Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s news conference Saturday, you wouldn’t have known it as he kept getting asked about surprising Florida Gulf Coast.
“You guys are asking so much about them. We are playing Creighton and they are damn good.” The all-time college basketball wins leader wants to make sure nobody thinks he is underestimating the Jays.
“Somebody is going to say, well he didn’t talk about McDermott, he must think McDermott stinks. Then he goes for 50 against us tomorrow and I am shaking hands with him after we get beat and he says, show us some respect next time. I said I did, I did, I promise you I did that.”
“I said we should have ran with it when we got in there and been like, Coach K is not giving us any credit, but nobody ran with me on that,” said Creighton guard Grant Gibbs.
In fact, Coach K thinks Doug McDermott is one of the best players to come around in years. “He is really one of the best offensive players that I have seen in the last decade in college basketball.”
“I don't even believe that, it is crazy,” said Doug. “Coach K, obviously the best coach in the country. It is crazy to hear that, but I am focused on tomorrow. Can’t really listen to that, just have to use it as confidence maybe.”
He may have the most wins of all time, but coach Krzyzewski is jealous of one thing Creighton has going. “The guy who coaches him seems to have a really close relationship with him. It is like his father. I wish I could develop that. They look like father and son. I wish I could have that relationship with my guys.”
It is going to be a tough task against one of the best programs in college basketball history, but Creighton is hoping to advance to the Sweet 16. The 28-7 Bluejays and 28-5 Blue Devils are scheduled to tip-off at 8:40 p.m. Sunday on TBS.
