Freshman Tommy Clouthier capped a five-run rally in the 11th with a three-run double to lift Creighton past host Illinois State 9-4 Sunday afternoon.
Brad McKewon opened the 11th by bouncing a single up the middle. Federico Castagnini tried to sacrifice McKewon to second, but pitcher Jeremy Rhoades (1-1) sailed the throw into center field. The error allowed McKewon to take third. Jake Peter (2-0) plated McKewon with a single. After a sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, Alex Staehely was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brennan Murphy worked a five-pitch walk to make it 6-4. One out later Clouthier put the game away with a three-run double to right, his first hit as a Bluejay.
Mike Hollenbeck and Brock Stewart homered for Illinois State. Stewart's two-run blast in the ninth tied the game at 4-4.
The Bluejays salvaged the series finale after dropping the first two games to improve to 25-13 and 9-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference and snapping the Redbirds 13-game winning streak, leaving them 31-17, 11-4 in the MVC.
