Head coach Greg McDermott announced the non-conference schedule for the 2014-15 Creighton men's basketball team on Tuesday. Eight home games, two contests at the Emerald Coast Classic in Florida and road tests at Tulsa, Nebraska and North Texas highlight the slate.
Six of the teams played in the postseason a year ago, including five NCAA Tournament qualifiers.
Creighton tips off the 2014-15 season on November 7 when it hosts Sioux Falls in an exhibition game. The Cougars are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and went 15-12 last season.
The regular-season begins one week later on Friday, Nov. 14 when Central Arkansas visits CenturyLink Center Omaha. The contest against the Bears starts CU's five-game homestand to open the regular-season, matching CU's longest streak of home games to open a season in the last 30 years.
Two days later Chicago State travels to Omaha. It will be the third trip to Omaha in the last four years for the Cougars.
Big 12 Conference title contender Oklahoma makes its first trip to Omaha since 1973 on Nov. 19 to start a home-and-home series between the schools. The Sooners have already been projected to be a top-20 team in early 2014-15 prognostications by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com, but Creighton has won 24 straight regular-season home games against teams from BCS leagues dating to 1996-97.
Creighton wraps up the homestand with games on Nov. 23 vs. North Carolina Central and Nov. 25 vs. Eastern Illinois. Both contests are part of the Emerald Coast Classic.
The Bluejays face their first games away from home on Nov. 28-29 as play in the Emerald Coast Classic resumes in Niceville, Fla., on the campus of Northwest Florida State College. CU will play against Ole Miss on Nov. 28 before concluding the event with a game the following day against either Middle Tennessee or Cincinnati.
Creighton will open December with its first two true road games of the season. CU closes a four-year series with Tulsa on Dec. 3 with a game at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Oklahoma.
The Bluejays will get their first look inside Pinnacle Bank Arena on Dec. 7 with a trip to Lincoln to face Nebraska. The Bluejays have won 12 of the last 15 regular-season match-ups with the Cornhuskers, including three straight double-digit triumphs.
CU returns from Lincoln with a three-game homestand that begins on Dec. 9 against South Dakota, which is coached by former Nebraska assistant coach Craig Smith.
Perennial West Coast power Saint Mary's plays at Creighton for the first time in 35 years on Dec. 13. The Gaels owed the Bluejays a return game from a 2013 BracketBusters game contested in Moraga, Calif.
CU's final two non-conference games are against teams from Texas. Texas-Pan American visits Omaha on Dec. 19 before the Jays close out non-conference play on Dec. 21 with a game in Denton, Texas, against North Texas.
After the Christmas break Creighton will begin its second season of double round-robin play in the BIG EAST Conference before heading to Madison Square Garden for the BIG EAST Tournament, which will be March 11-14.
CU's league schedule likely won't be released for another 6-8 weeks. Start times and potential television coverage for CU's games are also pending, and will be added to GoCreighton.com upon confirmation.
Creighton went 27-8 in 2013-14 while finishing second in the BIG EAST. The Bluejays advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season. The Bluejays are 107-38 after four seasons with McDermott at Creighton. For season ticket info, call (402) 280-JAYS.
