Despite Gerber's Three-Run Bomb, Baseball Falls 7-4

Despite a three-run home run from senior Mike Gerber, the Creighton baseball team fell to 0-2 with a 7-4 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) moved to 2-0 following the win.

Creighton fell behind 3-0 in the opening frame as UALR scored on two walks and a two-run double from Jason Steelmon. An error allowed Steelmon to come around to score on the double.

The Bluejays' deficit grew to 6-0 in the second on two walks and a three-run home run off the bat of Austin Pfeiffer with two down in the second.

Trailing 7-0 entering the top of the sixth, Creighton mounted a charge. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald opened the frame with a walk, then junior Jake Peter laced a single through the right side. Gerber followed with his first home run of 2014 over the right-center field wall to chase Trojan starter Ethan Schlechte.

Bluejay sophomore Reagan Fowler met UALR's Chase Rousseau by reaching base on an error. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Joey Mancuso drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Freshman Nicky Lopez continued the Creighton rally with an RBI single through the right side to make it 7-4. After a walk to senior Brad McKewon loaded the bases, Creighton was unable to keep the rally when Fitzgerald was called out on strikes to end the top of the sixth.

The Trojans kept Creighton off the board in each of the final three frames to claim the game and the series.
McKewon and Gerber led the Bluejay offense as McKewon finished the game with two hits and Gerber delivered three RBI.

Creighton sophomore Tommy Strunc suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on two hits and five walks in 1.2 innings. Schlechte claimed the win, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in five innings.
