Nick Musec picked up his first win of the season as Creighton defeated Southern Illinois 5-3 Saturday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.
Musec tied a career-high with five strikeouts while working 5.1 innings to improve to 1-4. He was followed on the mound by Mark Lukowski, Mark Winkelman and Bryan Sova. SIU's Derek Fogel fell to 0-2, allowing five runs (four earned) before exiting with the bases loaded with one out in the fifth.
Creighton's offense was led by a 3-for-4 day at the plate by Mike Gerber while Federico Castagnini, Kevin Lamb and Brennan Murphy each had two hits. SIU got two hits each from Jake Welch, Rennie Troggio, Austin Montgomery and Cody Daily.
The Salukis (18-20, 2-9 MVC) trailed 5-3 with runners at the corners and no outs in the ninth when Sova was called on to pitch. Troggio bunted to move Welch to second as the tying run for the first out. Matt Jones hit a ball to the gap in right-center that was hauled in by Murphy for the second out. After an intentional walk to Montgomery, Sova got Ryan Casillas to fly out to right on a 3-2 pitch.
Musec wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam to allow just one run in the first inning. CU responded with three runs, highlighted by a bases-loaded walk to Reagan Fowler and a two-run single from Lamb in the home half of the first.
The Jays (21-9, 7-4 MVC) tacked on a run in the second inning on a Castagnini sacrifice fly and later extended the lead to 5-2 in the fifth on Gerber's run-scoring single.
