Creighton opened the game with an 11-2 run and later added an 18-0 flurry as the Bluejays easily defeated Indiana State 64-43 in the MVC Tournament semifinal Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.
The Bluejays are 11-1 all-time in MVC Tournament championship games, including last year's 83-79 overtime win against Illinois State. The Jays will face Wichita State in Sunday's final, which airs at 1:05 p.m. on CBS.
One of the nation's best shooting teams, Creighton (26-7) made 8-of-9 shots from three-point range to open the game and were never threatened while avenging a 76-57 loss last month in Terre Haute.
Creighton made its first four shots to bolt to an early 11-2 lead. Jahenns Manigat and Doug McDermott made three-pointers to open the game and were followed by a dunk from Gregory Echenique and a three-point play by McDermott, who sank his second triple to make it 14-2.
After ISU drew to within 18-9, Creighton unleashed a most impressive 18-0 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by McDermott started the bulge. Echenique would then score on a post move inside before slamming home his second dunk of the half.
Three-balls by Manigat and Austin Chatman capped the run, which lasted nearly seven minutes and put CU ahead 36-9 before two free throws by ISU reserve Jake Kitchell. CU's biggest lead of the half was 28 points (39-11), before settling for a 41-18 margin at intermission.
Creighton shot 16-of-26 from the floor in the first half, including 8-of-11 from downtown, while also leading the glass 16-13. McDermott led all players with 18 points and five rebounds. ISU got five points each from Manny Arop and Jake Odum at the half, but were just 6-of-24 from the field and 0-of-7 from deep.
The second half featured plenty of whistles as neither team made an extended rally. McDermott finished the afternoon with 25 points and nine rebounds, draining 8-of-10 field goal attempts and 6-of-7 from three-point range. Echenique had his second straight double-digit game as well, tallying 10 points.
ISU was led by 13 points from Arop.
