Creighton Men's Basketball Vaults Up In National Polls

OMAHA, Neb. -- Three straight double-figure wins have helped the Creighton men's basketball team make a big jump in the national basketball rankings released on Monday. In addition, the Jays continue to lead the nation in field goal percentage, three-point percentage and three-pointers per game in the latest statistical rankings released on Monday.

Creighton is ranked 13th nationally in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll and 16th in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Jays jumped four spots in the coaches poll and five slots in the AP rankings after beating Missouri State (91-77) and Bradley (75-58) last week. Dating to the final three polls of last season, Creighton has now been ranked in a school-record 17 straight Associated Press polls.

Creighton has now been ranked in the AP poll during 26 of Greg McDermott's 51 weeks at the helm, not to mention five other weeks where it's been 26th, 27th or 28th. The 26 weeks in the poll are most of any Creighton basketball coach in history.

Statistically, Creighton ranks among the nation’s top-13 in nine different categories through games of Feb. 3rd. The Jays lead the nation in field goal percentage (.520), three-point percentage (.449) and three-pointers per game (9.8). The Jays are second with 18.3 assists per game, fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.53), sixth in points (1816), seventh in scoring offense (79.0) and ninth in both scoring margin (+16.2) and in winning percentage (.870).

The only team to ever finish a season leading the nation in both 3-pointers per game and 3-point percentage was Princeton in 1987-88, while the only team to ever lead the nation in both field goal percentage and three-point percentage was Northern Arizona 1998-99.

Individually, Doug McDermott is second in points per game (24.0), 23rd in field goal percentage (.565), 38th in free-throw percentage (.867), 102nd in double-doubles (5) and 157th in rebounds per game (7.3). Grant Gibbs is fifth in assist/turnover ratio (3.05) and 27th in assists per game (5.83). In addition, Gregory Echenique ranks 80th in blocked shots per game (1.78), 102nd in double-doubles (5) and 178th in rebounds per game (7.1). Also in the top-100 are Ethan Wragge, who is 10th in three-point percentage (.450) and 53rd with 2.57 three-pointers per game, and Austin Chatman who ranks 79th with 4.74 assists per game and 88th with a 2.06 assist/turnover ratio.

Creighton (20-3, 9-2 MVC) returns to the court on Wednesday when it visits Indiana State (14-8, 7-4 MVC) in a contest slated for a 6:05 pm Central
start.
