The Creighton baseball team dropped a hard fought series opening game at St. John's by a 6-5 score on Friday, May 9.
The loss dropped Creighton to 25-15-1 on the season and 10-3 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's took sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST at 11-2. The Red Storm also moved to 32-15 on the season.
The Bluejays got on the board first with a run in the top of the second and freshman Nicky Lopez laced a one-out single to right, stole second and scored an a two-out RBI single from senior Cody Kottich.
St. John's responded with three runs in its half of the second to take a 3-1 edge. The Bluejays returned the favor in the third with three runs of their own.
Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald and junior Jake Peter opened the frame with singles to center. Senior Mike Gerber knotted the game at 3-3 with a single to right to plate Fitzgerald, then an errent throw by Red Storm shortstop Bret Dennis allowed Peter to score.
Later in the inning, sophomore Brett Murray pushed Creighton back in front with an RBI single to left.
The Red Storm pulled even at 4-4 via two hit batters and two sacrifices in the fourth before the offenses for each team calmed down.
The two squads remained deadlocked at 4-4 into the seventh. Once more it was the Bluejays to push ahead as Fitzgerald singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scampered home thanks to an RBI single from Gerber.
St. John's pulled even with a run in the seventh and nabbed a 6-5 lead with another tally in the eighth.
Creighton's Bryan Sova took the loss (4-1), allowing one run on three hits and two walks in two innings of relief. St. John's Matt Clancy (3-3) nabbed the win despite allowing one run on two hits and a walk in two innings of work.
