While the Creighton men's basketball team is in St. Louis getting ready for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, school officials may be making a play of their own.
News outlets back east are reporting that Big East officials will soon name a new conference and CU fans are certain they'll hear them say "Bluejays."
Some are already planning to see Georgetown and Villanova playing Creighton in the CenturyLink Center. Many think the Bluejays fit nicely into the new Big East and that the conference switch is, if not imminent, is inevitable.
It looks like almost any March day on the Creighton campus, but instead of students looking forward to spring break many of the underclassmen are looking forward to the Big East Conference announcement.
"I think it would be a good option for us, it would put us into a power conference for both soccer and basketball," said Jonathan Oliver. "I think it would draw a lot of people here."
Many fans expect big game excitement and standing room only crowds every game if the new conference becomes a reality. At DJ's Dugout, manager Sunni Renner has mixed feelings about the move, but understands that the school has to do what is best for Creighton.
"I think it will be sad to step away from tradition, The Missouri Valley, but to get big teams out here like Georgetown and to see if Xavier will make a move."
Many feel that the move would be great in the long run, but wonder how long it would take the Bluejays to be competitive in the new conference.
Oliver believes Creighton would be competitive from the start. "I think we can compete with most of the teams in the conference that are at least projected to go in."
