Federico Castagnini, Mike Gerber and Jordan Makovicka each drove in two runs leading Creighton to a 9-1 win over Southern Illinois Sunday at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha to complete a sweep of the weekend series.
The Jays jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Brad McKewon doubled, was sacrificed to third by Castagnini and scored on a wild pitch by Sam Coonrod (3-3). Jake Peter and Gerber knocked back-to-back triples and Reagan Fowler reached on a fielder's choice allowing Gerber to score. Kevin Lamb singled sending Fowler to second, Brennan Murphy forced Lamb at second, Ryan Fitzgerald walked to load the bases and Makovicka walked to force in Fowler.
Peter tripled again in the fourth and scored on Gerber's single to make it a 5-1 game. In the fifth, Fitzgerald singled and scored on a Makovicka double for a 6-1 edge. In the sixth, Peter walked, stole second, took third on Gerber's fly out and scored on a passed ball and it was 7-1.
The Bluejays added two more runs in the seventh after two were out. Makovicka walked, McKewon singled and took second on a throwing error that also allowed Makovicka to advance to third. Castagnini singled them both home.
Nick Highberger (1-0) got the win in relief. The Bluejays improved to 22-9 and 8-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis are 18-21, 2-10 in conference play.
