CU Soccer Scores Milestone Victory in Dramatic Fashion

The No. 5 Creighton men’s soccer team claimed program win No. 400 all-time as well as its first victory in the Jays’ BIG EAST Conference opener in dramatic fashion Saturday night over No. 7 St. John’s at Morrison Stadium.

In the Jays’ third consecutive double-overtime contest this season, CU freshman Fabian Herbers scored the lone goal of the match off of a free kick at 108:05 to give the Jays a thrilling 1-0 decision over the Red Storm. The goal was Herbers’ second score of the season, both game-winning tallies.

Both teams stepped up their defensive efforts in the game as neither squad could put together scoring chances very easily. Creighton (5-1-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) came out on top in shot attempts 13-9 while St. John’s (5-2-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) attempted two corners to just one for the Jays in the match.

Creighton goalkeeper Alex Bolowich earned his fifth win of the season to go to 5-1-0, making three saves in just over 108 minutes of action. Rafael Diaz of St. John’s made one save for the Red Storm and dropped to 5-2-0 in 2013.

With the win over St. John’s, Creighton improved to 22-3-2 all-time against Top 25 opponents visiting Morrison Stadium. The Jays now boast an impressive 25-12-6 mark all-time against teams ranked No. 7 or better.

An energetic Homecoming crowd of 5,282 saw the Bluejays record the multiple-milestone victory. It marked the sixth-largest crowd all-time in Morrison Stadium history. The Jays are now 5-7-1 in front of crowds of 5,000-plus fans since 2000.

Creighton battles non-conference foe Michigan State of the Big Ten in a BLUE OUT match on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. inside Morrison Stadium.

Fans attending the men’s soccer match are encouraged to wear blue apparel to create a blue out in support of prostate and testicular cancer awareness. The Bluejays will wear blue tops, shorts and socks while the Spartans will wear all white in support of the cause which is an event co-sponsored by Creighton Athletics and the Creighton student chapter of Colleges Against Cancer.
