The Huskers were out-shot 15-13, but were unable to get anything past the Nittany Lions’ defense or goalie Erin McNulty in a 4-0 loss to Penn State Friday afternoon in Lincoln.
The Lions (13-2-0, 7-0-0 Big Ten) jumped to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when Maya Hayes, the 2011 Big Ten Forward of the Year, scored her 10th goal of the season on an assist from Christine Nairn.
Mallory Weber pushed PSU’s lead to 2-0 at 20:23 with her ninth goal of the year. The freshman blasted a shot from 20 yards away and when a pair of Husker defenders tried to block the shot, the ball got deflected off one of their legs and slipped past NU goaltender Emma Stevens.
Hayes later added her second goal of the game at 81:19 when Stevens was unable to control a cross and Hayes stole the ball and dribbled in for an easy open-net shot. Hayes notched her fifth point of the game at 84:17 when she assisted on Taylor Schram’s second goal of the season.
Nebraska fell to 6-8-1, 3-4-0 in the Big Ten.
