Nebraska split a doubleheader at Illinois on Saturday, taking game one 6-2 before dropping a 5-4 decision in the second game.
Illinois scored a pair of unearned run in the bottom of the first in the opener. Nebraska, frustrated through the first six inning by Illinois right-hander Pepper Gay, broke through for its first run in the sixth when Taylor Edwards was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Trailing 2-1 entering the seventh, a hit batter and a Tatum Edwards' double put runners on second and third with one out. Courtney Breault came on to pinch hit and tied the score with a single. The Huskers loaded the bases on a walk to Alicia Armstrong and Kiki Stokes then worked a bases-loaded walk to give Nebraska a 3-2 lead. Taylor Edwards capped the five-run inning with a bases-clearing double.
It was the Illini's turn to rally in game two, scoring three runs in the sixth for a 5-4 win. The inning featured two infield singles, a Husker error and a bases-loaded hit batter and a bases-loaded walk.
Tatum Edwards (15-5) saw her eight-game winning streak snapped as she suffered the loss in relief. Edwards allowed three runs (two earned) in 2.0 innings.
Sister Taylor Edwards hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth that gave Nebraska a 3-2 lead. Hailey Decker added an RBI single in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-2 before Illinois' three-run rally in the bottom of the frame.
With the loss Nebraska fell to 24-7, 3-1 in conference play.
