The Huskers rolled over the Southern Jaguars 66-55 in their season opener and head coach Tim Miles’ debut Sunday night in Lincoln.

It was the 1,400th win in program history and 23rd straight victorious home opener.

Nebraska jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first four minutes and extended it to 16-6 with Ray Gallegos dropping in five points off a three-point shot and a finger roll. Southern cut the lead to 16-14 with eight unanswered points.

NU had its own burst, pushing the score to 27-15 on an 11-1 run as Gallegos scored five more points. Nebraska held a double-digit lead until 2:08 left in the half when Southern’s Javan Mitchell hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 29-21. The first half concluded with a 31-25 NU lead.

The Huskers took an 11-point lead at 42-31 in the first five minutes of the second half. Dylan Talley's three-point jumper increased the lead to 47-35.

Brandon Ubel's basket put NU up 52-36 before the Jaguars responded. With 8:31 remaining, Southern slimmed the margin to 52-41 with five unanswered points. The lead fell to single digits at 56-48 with 3:45 remaining, but Ubel bumped it back up to double digits when he was fouled on a layup and hit the free throw. He would finish with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
