The Big Ten Conference office announced on Monday that Nebraska second baseman Pat Kelly has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Kelly was also named freshman of the week on March 19, the same day teammate Josh Scheffert was named Big Ten Player of the Week.
Kelly hit .444 (8-for-18) last week in four starts with two home runs and 15 total bases. His two home runs both came against Minnesota this past weekend, as the Huskers swept the Golden Gophers and moved from seventh in the Big Ten standings into a tie for fourth.
In the series opener on Friday night, Kelly hit a two-run homer that proved to be the eventual game winner in a 4-3 NU win. Kelly moved to the leadoff spot in game two of the series and was 4-for-5 at the plate. He broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on Saturday with a solo home run that carried Nebraska to an 8-7 victory. Kelly added a double on Sunday in the Huskers 6-5 win for his 15th extra-base hit of the season. In 18 at bats for the week, Kelly struck out just one time and is currently riding an 11-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s game with Wichita State.
The Huskers play their final home game of the season on Tuesday night when the Wichita State Shockers visit Hawks Field. Scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch, the game will be shown across the state on NET and streamed live on BTN.com.
Nebraska then hits the road for its final three games of the regular season when it pays a visit to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the Michigan Wolverines for a three-game series that starts on Thursday, May 17.
