The Omaha men’s basketball team continued its challenging 10-game road stretch Tuesday night, falling to Wisconsin 86-40 at the Kohl Center. The Mavericks are now 2-8 (0-2 Summit League) on the season, while the Badgers improve to 6-3 (0-0 Big Ten).
Junior guard Justin Simmons, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., paced Omaha with 12 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Alex Welhouse, also playing in his home state, finished with five boards and four points. Junior forward Matt Hagerbaumer chipped in six points and four rebounds off the bench.
Wisconsin had five players score in double figures, led by Ben Brust’s double-double off 15 points and 10 rebounds. Brust went 4-for-8 from long range and added three assists and three steals. Ryan Evans also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Jared Berggren (13 points) Frank Kaminsky (11) and Sam Dekker (10) rounded out the Badgers’ scoring effort.
As a team, UNO shot 33 percent (17-of-51) to UW’s 49 percent showing (34-of-70). The Badgers shot at a 30 percent clip from 3-point range, but managed eight treys to the Mavs’ two.
Two early baskets from Simmons put the Mavs in front 5-2 to open the game, but Wisconsin surged ahead with a 12-0 run highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Brust. The Badgers then used runs of 8-0, 8-0 and 10-0 to build a sizable first-half lead, shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) to UNO’s 22 percent (5-of-23). UW also had five treys in the half while UNO was silent from beyond the arc, and the Badgers, who forced 10 turnovers, led 42-13 by halftime.
The Mavs’ shooting improved to 22 percent in the second stanza, but the Badgers nearly matched their first-half effort at 47 percent. Thirteen different UW players scored in the second half, led by six points from Brust. Wisconsin went on to take the game 86-40.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 9, traveling to Iowa State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, and the game will be broadcast live on 1180 AM. Links to live stats, live video and live audio will be available on OMavs.com.
