Nebraska begins the week of its Big Ten opener not knowing who its quarterback will be against Illinois.
Taylor Martinez hasn't practiced for two weeks because of a nagging turf toe on his left foot. Coach Bo Pelini said Monday that if Martinez doesn't practice Tuesday or Wednesday, Tommy Armstrong Jr. probably will be the starter for the second straight game.
Pelini said he wants Martinez to be 100 percent when he returns to practice, and the coach said the senior is getting closer.
Martinez started 32 straight games before missing the Sept. 21 game against South Dakota State. He ran tentatively against UCLA the week before and hasn't practiced since.
Armstrong and Ron Kellogg III each played five series against South Dakota State.
