The Maverick women rallied from a 12-point, second-half deficit to knock off Oakland 67-63 Saturday afternoon in Rochester, Michigan.
The Mavs (15-7, 5-5 Summit) snapped a four-game road skid in conference games with the comeback win. Oakland fell to 8-13 and 2-7 in Summit League play. Omaha sits in fourth place in The Summit League standings with six games to go.
Paige Frauendorfer led four Mavs in double figures and two with double-doubles with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Taijhe Kelly added a season-high 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots for her first double-double of the season. Jamie Nash had 13 points, five assists and four steals and Ericka House hit 4-of-9 from three-point range to finish with 12 points.
Oakland opened up a 19-9 lead to begin the game and fended off a Maverick rally that had cut it to three at 21-18 with 7:51 left in the half. The Golden Grizzlies built the lead to 10 again with 3:47 to play in the first half, but UNO closed the half on a 9-4 run to pull to within five, 36-31, at the break.
Oakland pushed the lead to 47-35 with 17:01 to play on a jumper by Amy Carlton, but the Mavs gradually began to take over the game after that. Frauendorfer scored back-to-back baskets to make it 47-39. After Victoria Lipscomb gave OU an 11-point lead with a three-pointer, Frauendorfer hit another jumper, grabbed a defensive rebound at the other end and rebounded a missed three-pointer by House on the offensive end, which resulted in House connecting on a second try at a three to cut it to 50-44 with 13:54 left.
Oakland held a 56-50 lead with 9:06 left, but Frauendorfer and Nash hit baskets on consecutive possessions to make it 56-54 with 8:17 left. The Mavs finally tied the game on a free throw by Nash with 5:39 left to make it 57-57, but Oakland regained control with the next four points for a 61-57 lead with 3:49 on the clock.
Frauendorfer cut the lead to three with a free throw with 3:37 remaining and Kelly whittled the lead to one, 61-60, with a layup with 2:06 left. Each team missed on its next possession, but the Mavs got another stop and a defensive board from Frauendorfer and called timeout with :56 left down by one. Nash hit the go-ahead basket with :38 left for a 62-61 Maverick lead, their first since it was 4-3 in the opening minutes.
Oakland's Lipscomb misfired on a shot with :21 remaining and Nash hit two free throws after being fouled to give UNO a 64-61 lead with :20 left.
Nash made a steal at the other end with :10 left and hit the first free throw to make it 65-61, missed the second, but grabbed her own rebound. Carly Cator iced the game with two free throws with :06 left before Oakland's Elizabeth Hamlet hit an inconsequential layup at the buzzer.
Frauendorfer had 13 of her 17 points in the second half to spark the Mavs. Frauendorfer, Nash and Kelly combined for 28 of the Mavs' 36 points in the second half.
