UNO women's soccer sophomore defender Emily Michaels has been selected to sing the National Anthem at this Saturday's Sporting Kansas City match after winning SKC's inaugural "Oh Say Can You Sing" National Anthem Contest.
With hundreds of submissions, 10 finalists were selected by a collection of Sporting Kansas City players and front office staff. The 10 YouTube videos were posted to SportingKC.com for a fan vote. In a close contest, Michaels edged out the competition and will now perform the National Anthem on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Sporting Park prior to Sporting KC's match against D.C. United at 7:30 p.m.
A limited number of tickets are available for the matchup between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. Secure your seat online at Ticketmaster.com.
Cox Communications subscribers in Omaha will also be able to watch Michaels' performance and Saturday's match because of her selection. The game will air on Cox2 (Channel 126).
"I am incredibly blessed with such a huge support system," Michaels said. "My team was the biggest help in getting my name out there for this contest. I was honestly speechless when I woke up to an email congratulating me on winning. I thought it was a joke at first!"
Jokes aside, Michaels will head to Kansas City on Saturday after the Mavericks open their season on Friday against Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
