Freshman right wing Austin Ortega has been named the Bauer NCHC Rookie of the Week for his efforts last week in the Omaha hockey team’s series at Miami.
Ortega tied for the team scoring lead during the series with two goals and an assist for three points. He finished the weekend with a +1 rating.
On Friday, the native of Escondido, Calif. had a powerplay goal and assisted on the Mavericks’ other goal in a 2-2 tie with the RedHawks. The following night, he scored another powerplay goal as the Mavs beat Miami, 5-1, to snap a seven-game winless streak.
Ortega is tied with Colorado College’s Jacob Slavin for sixth in freshman scoring in the NCHC with 12 points, a total that includes six goals and six assists.
Ortega is the second Maverick to earn rookie of the week honors, following Jake Guentzel who earned the same nod in November following a weekend sweep at Denver. It’s also the sixth weekly award for a Maverick this season. In addition to Guentzel, Josh Archibald has twice been named the offensive player of the week while Dominic Zombo has picked up the award once. Ryan Massa also has been named the goaltender of the week.
Guentzel also was named the NCHC Rookie of the Month for November.
The Mavericks are off this week but return to action on Jan. 31- Feb. 1 when they host St. Cloud State.
